The Darkness

                 by Maya Nepos

The silence is a blank canvas,

The night is an empty page,

The darkness is a clean slate.

Surrounded by vast emptiness,

There is nowhere to hide.

Children fear the dark,

I once did too.

Until I began to realize,

It is not truly the darkness which we fear,

We are afraid of what hides in it.

The arms and legs and teeth and eyes,

The ghosts and claws and clowns,

The supernatural, the unknown.

Suddenly I found myself no longer afraid,

But drawn to darkness like a moth to a candle.

I let it in.

I let it fill me up.

I let it become part of me.

Instead of the enemy,

The darkness became my friend.

We don't need to be afraid

of the monsters under our beds

Because the scariest monsters,

Are inside of us.
