These things are supposed to start with a punch, I think. Something to knock the audience off of their game, to captivate them well enough that they actually listen to you for the next five minutes, despite how dreadfully boring the minutes will prove to be. That’s why monologues, soliloquies, whatever you want to call them, are one of the worst parts of acting.

He leaves the day of his sister’s graduation. The entire ceremony is stifling; on his left is the overly fruity stench of his mother’s perfume, and on his right is his father, constantly reminding him to “sit up straight, Elijah.” His father is already quite angry with him, since Elijah is almost late (he had gone for a run that moment, and hadn’t wanted to stop). When his eyes flicker to his sister, easy to pick out by the dark skin they share . . .

Generally, we tell direction by the changing landscape. From the deciduous forests to the temperate ones, and that one time, the desert, the oldest, the ones who still call this place America guide us. Jonathon, a man with skin darker than the trees and wrinkles deeper than that of the bark, had once told me people found their way with something called a map.
